What GBL Members Should Know

GBL is more than a place to bowl each week. This guide explains what members can expect from the league, what their fees support, the key rules that apply during the season, and how members can participate, raise questions, and help maintain a welcoming community.

GALA Bowling League is more than a place to bowl each week. GBL brings together LGBTQIA+ people and allies for friendly competition, community, social connection, volunteerism, and fun.

Bowlers of all experience levels are welcome. Some members join with years of league experience, while others are picking up a bowling ball for the first time. Whether you are here to compete, improve your game, spend time with friends, or meet new people, our goal is to provide a welcoming and well-organized experience on and off the lanes.

Throughout the year, members may also have opportunities to participate in social events, awards banquets, volunteer activities, community outreach, tournaments, and other league programs.

GALA Bowling League (GBL) is a Rhode Island nonprofit corporation, created with the LGBTQIA+ community in mind and open to everyone.

GBL is sanctioned by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) and is a member of the International Gay Bowling Organization (IGBO). League play follows USBC rules along with the local rules adopted by GBL.

GBL is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and two primary governing documents:

• The Bylaws establish the basic structure of the organization. They address membership, voting, the Board of Directors, elections, finances, league fees, and other major organizational responsibilities.
• The Policy Register contains more detailed policies and operating rules. It includes the Code of Conduct, gameplay rules, privacy and media practices, Board duties, and other day-to-day procedures.

This member guide summarizes the portions of those documents that most directly affect bowlers.

GBL works to provide members with:

• A welcoming and inclusive environment
• A balance of friendly competition and social connection
• Organized weekly play under USBC and GBL rules
• Opportunities to meet and bowl with people throughout the league
• Clear communication about schedules, events, registration, and important league updates
• Social events, awards, volunteer opportunities, and community activities
• A Board elected by eligible Regular Bowlers and responsible for managing the organization
• Opportunities for eligible members to vote, attend Board meetings, ask questions, and become involved in league leadership

Members also share responsibility for making the experience successful. That includes paying fees on time, following gameplay and conduct rules, communicating with team captains and league leadership, and helping maintain a safe and enjoyable environment.

Your league fee helps pay for the full GBL experience, not just the games bowled each week.

League fees may support:

• Weekly bowling-center charges, including lane costs (lineage) and applicable shoe rentals
• USBC sanction fees and IGBO dues for Regular Bowlers
• League administration, registration, scheduling, and recordkeeping
• Team and individual awards and trophies
• Season-end awards banquets
• League parties, social activities, and member events
• Other operating expenses approved as part of the league’s annual budget

GBL is a Rhode Island nonprofit corporation. League fees are used to cover league costs and support GBL’s recreational and charitable activities. They are not distributed to Board members or other individuals for personal benefit.

GBL is an adult league, and our events and activities are open to people age 18 and older.

GBL has three types of bowlers:

• Regular Bowlers are assigned to a team roster. 
• Substitutes fill in and their scores count. 
• Pacers may bowl to balance the rotation, but their scores do not count.

Substitutes must be sanctioned with USBC & IGBO, but Pacers do not.

Regular Bowlers may vote and serve on the Board as long as their fees and other obligations are current and they are not suspended or under disciplinary review. Substitutes and Pacers may participate, but they do not vote or serve on the Board.

Substitutes and Pacers are not guaranteed a bowling opportunity each week and may bowl only when space is available. Substitutes and Pacers are not eligible to bowl in the playoffs, and additional eligibility requirements may apply to awards and season-end activities.

You do not need to have a complete team to join. Teams generally have two to four Regular Bowlers, and GBL may help place individual bowlers or add bowlers to incomplete teams based on availability and team needs.

You are responsible for guests you bring to GBL activities. Guests must follow the same conduct rules as members.

The Weekly League Fee is the amount you pay each week to bowl:

• Regular Bowlers pay the Weekly League Fee every week, even when they don’t bowl because GBL is still charged by the bowling center. 
• Substitutes and Pacers pay only when they bowl. 

The Weekly League Fee is payable in cash or check made payable to GALA Bowling League, Inc.

Payments are turned in through your team’s Captain. Paying in advance is encouraged, and you may pay for multiple weeks in advance, or you may pay for the entire season.

GBL does not allow bowling on credit. If you are more than two weeks behind, you cannot bowl beginning the third week and may not be allowed to play until the balance is paid.

The final two weeks of the season must be prepaid by Week 13. A refund of prepaid final-week fees may be available when a Regular Bowler leaves for a valid reason and gives notice to their team's Captain and the Secretary.

An approved leave of absence may excuse Weekly League Fees. A leave lasts at least four weeks and requires one week of notice to your Captain and the Secretary.

GBL pays USBC and IGBO dues for Regular Bowlers. Anyone joining after Week 3 must pay those costs when they join.

Treat people with respect. Discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, fighting, threats, taunting, and unsafe behavior are not allowed.

The Code of Conduct applies at all GBL games and events and covers members, guests, spectators, volunteers, and vendors. Serious misconduct may lead to removal, suspension, or expulsion. Retaliation against someone who raises a concern in good faith is also prohibited.

Do not bowl or participate in another GBL activity when you are injured, ill, impaired, or otherwise unable to participate safely.

GBL follows USBC rules along with the local rules in the Policy Register.

• A legal lineup requires at least one rostered bowler to be present for the first frame or to have pre-bowled.
• If a rostered bowler is absent and no Substitute is used, the team uses that bowler’s average minus 10 pins. A vacancy score is 150.
• A late bowler may join the first game only before the opposing team finishes three full frames.
• Individual pre-bowling is generally limited to six weeks per season and three weeks in a row unless an exception is approved.
• Playoffs require at least two rostered bowlers from each team to be physically present. Substitutes and pre-bowled scores are not allowed.
• The bowler on the right has lane priority. Keep food, drinks, and non-bowlers out of the approach and well areas, and do not distract someone on the approach.

GBL is sanctioned by the United States Bowling Congress and follows the applicable USBC Playing Rules. Members are expected to follow those rules during league play. The Member Guide only highlights certain rules most relevant to regular GBL participation.

Email is GBL’s primary method for sharing important league information, including schedules, announcements, events, fee reminders, weather updates, and other time-sensitive notices. Members are responsible for providing an accurate email address and checking league messages. GBL may also use text messages for urgent or time-sensitive updates.

GBL collects the information needed to register members, manage rosters and payments, send updates, and address safety or accommodation needs. Limited information may be shared with teammates or team Captains, the bowling center, USBC, IGBO, and trusted service providers. GBL does not sell member information.

GBL may use photos or video from league activities in official materials. To opt out of GBL’s public use of your name or image, send a written request to the Secretary. The request applies going forward. GBL cannot control photos or posts made independently by other people.

Regular Bowlers may elect the Board and vote on matters assigned to the membership as long as their fees and other obligations are current and they are not suspended or under disciplinary review.

Regular Bowlers may attend Board meetings except closed executive sessions. Members may speak when recognized, and team Captains are given time to raise team questions.

When the Board updates the Bylaws or Policy Register, the updated documents must be made available to members.

For payments, absences, weekly play, or team communication, start with your team’s Captain. If you're a Captain, talk to the Director of Captains or the appropriate Board member.

For conduct, safety, privacy, or league-wide concerns, contact a Board member. Safety concerns, rule questions, conduct concerns, or other problems during GBL activities should be brought to the nearest Board member as soon as possible. Concerns involving suspected illegal, unethical, fraudulent, abusive, or other serious misconduct should be reported to the President. If the concern involves the President, it should be reported to the Vice President or another Board member. 

Reports will be handled as privately as reasonably possible, with information shared only with those who need it to review and respond to the concern. Retaliation against anyone who raises a concern in good faith is prohibited.

Gameplay disputes go first to the Board, with any available appeal through the local association or USBC.
